Meet Dr. Tejera
Dr. T.J. Tejera joined Southwest Florida Oral and Facial Surgery in March 2003 after returning to his home state of Florida with his family. Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Florida, he is fluent in both English and Spanish. He attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, before earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Tejera completed a General Surgery internship and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC Hospitals. During his final year of residency, he served as Chief Resident of the Oral and Maxillofacial Service. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in General Cosmetic Surgery at Carolina Surgical Arts in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he received advanced training in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Tejera joined Carolina Surgical Arts, practicing the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with an emphasis on facial cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery of the facial skeleton, and corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery. In 2003, he became board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Today, Dr. Tejera’s clinical practice focuses on cosmetic facial surgery, orthognathic surgery, facial reconstructive surgery, sleep apnea medicine and related surgical treatments, dental implants, and All-on-4® treatment. He also provides comprehensive care for patients with facial trauma, including facial fractures and soft tissue injuries, through the Lee Memorial Health System Trauma Program.
Beyond patient care, Dr. Tejera has contributed to more than five surgical textbooks, authored scientific publications, and presented his research at national meetings. He is recognized as one of the pioneers in Orthognathic Virtual Surgical Planning and is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
In 2012, Dr. Tejera was appointed as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), serving a six-year term, and was elected Section I Editor. That same year, he joined Nova Southeastern University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, where he remained active in educating residents and dental students for 12 years. He has also served as Secretary of the Medical Executive Committee of Lee Memorial Health System and Treasurer of the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (FSOMS).
Dr. Tejera has served on the OMSNIC Advisory Board and the OMSNIC Underwriting Appeals Committee while remaining active in local and national dental organizations. He also served as President of the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
In 2024, Dr. Tejera completed a 10-year tenure on the Florida Board of Dentistry after being appointed by the Governor in 2014. During his service, he was honored to serve two terms as Chair of the Board. In recognition of his dedication and leadership, the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons presented him with the Distinguished Service Award.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tejera has remained committed to advancing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery through patient care, education, research, and professional leadership.
